Irish Forever, the Maryland-based horse that took on many of the top 3-year-old turf fillies in the world in England last week, was scheduled to return to the United States last night and will now spend up to two days in quarantine at Newburgh, N.Y. The filly finished 10th, eight lengths behind the winner, Las Meninas, on Thursday in the English 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket Race Course.
Joan Boniface, wife of the filly's trainer, Billy Boniface, said her husband offered "no excuses" for the horse after the race. "The jockey [Alan Munro] said she lost her bounce [stride] at the dip, but Billy said she's been over that type of ground before. He really can't give her any excuse."
No tunnel at Laurel
If the Redskins build a stadium at Laurel using part of the grounds now occupied by horse barns, a new stable area will most likely be built on what is called the "Howard County" parking lot at the track.
Laurel/Pimlico operator Joe De Francis said he isn't ruling out any possibilities where the stable area might be relocated, but his project manager, John Mooney, said "our goal is to put it on that spot."
De Francis said that what has been ruled out is that a tunnel will not be built under railroad tracks which separate the proposed stabling site from the race course.
Instead, a bridge will be built over the railroad tracks for the horses to use to get to the racing strip.
De Francis said the stadium cannot be built until the new stable area is constructed. He added that the whole process is dependent upon Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke receiving zoning approval to proceed with the stadium.
"Until then, the stable area we have is adequate and will continue to be used," he said.
