Orioles update

The Orioles erupted with nine home runs and 23 runs in back-to-back games Tuesday and Wednesday. They only got four last night, but continued to rest their bullpen, as Sid Fernandez followed complete games by Arthur Rhodes and Ben McDonald with an 8 1/3 -inning effort. Cal Ripken leads the team with 19 RBIs, despite not hitting his first home run until Wednesday night. Rafael Palmeiro is hitting .353 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs. Brady Anderson (three home runs Tuesday and Wednesday) also is swinging a hot bat. Third baseman Chris Sabo has been in and out of the lineup with back troubles. The Orioles have won nine of 12.

Mariners update

The Mariners committed 26 errors in their first 21 games. Seattle lost two of three to the Orioles last weekend at Camden Yards. The turns of Randy Johnson and Chris Bosio did not come up during that series, but they do this time. At the Kingdome, Johnson is 2-0 with two walks in 18 innings. Felix Fermin is back in the lineup, which enabled Rich Amaral to move back to second base, his natural position. The Mariners' bullpen has two saves, with the second coming in last night's 6-0 win over the Yankees. The Mariners allowed five runs without a hit in the third inning of Wednesday's 12-2 loss to the Yankees. They walked seven and hit one batter during the inning. Baltimore native Jeff Nelson is off to a rough start. He hit five batters in his first 7 2/3 innings, walked six and allowed five hits.
