9-0 spree sends Hopkins past Hofstra, 15-7

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Sophomore midfielder Milford Marchant (Severna Park) broke a 6-6 deadlock with 15 seconds left in the third quarter and started a 9-0 run as No. 6 Johns Hopkins (6-3) downed host No. 15 Hofstra (6-4), 15-7, in a Division I game last night.

Sophomore attackman Dave Marr and freshman midfielders Billy Evans (Loyola) and Warner Krueger (Centennial) scored in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter.

Marr led the Blue Jays with four goals and two assists, and Terry Riordan, Brian Piccola and Michael Noonan each scored twice.

* Yale 7, Penn 6 -- Senior midfielder Gari Singh (Potomac) scored two goals to lead No. 18 Yale (7-6, 4-2) over Penn (4-7, 1-5) in New Haven, Conn., to end the Ivy League season.

* Army 15, Colgate 3 -- Rob Manning and John Orlando scored two goals apiece to pace No. 17 Army (7-5, 4-0) past visiting Colgate (4-6, 2-2) in a Patriot League game in West Point, N.Y.

Women

* Goucher 16, Widener 9 -- Freshman attack Liz Low scored seven goals to lead host Goucher (5-7) past Widener (2-8) in a Division III game.

Junior attack Sherri Malloy added five goals for the Gophers.

Freshman goalie Crystal Butcher made 16 saves, eight fewer than Widener senior Kristin Kelly.

* Harford CC 12, Villa Julie 11 -- Lisa Aquina, Stacey Tylus and Kim Adams each scored three goals to lead visiting Harford Community College past Villa Julie in a Maryland JuCo League game.
