April 27, 1994

County police have charged a Laurel man with assault and battery in the beating of a Laurel woman Saturday night.

Police arrested Stanley Jones, 36, at his home in the 3500 block of Whiskey Bottom Road after midnight Sunday. He was charged in the beating of Stacia Gilbert, 28, of Brockbridge Road.

She alleged that Mr. Jones attacked her, hitting her several times in the face and body and choking her, police said. Ms. Gilbert went to the Starting Gate Lounge in the 3400 block of Fort Meade Road and called police shortly after midnight.

An officer at the scene said the left side of Ms. Gilbert's face was swollen and her lip was bleeding, but she refused medical treatment.

She gave the officer Mr. Jones' address, and police went to the home and found Mr. Jones standing outside the house, police said.

The officers took him to the Starting Gate Bar, where Ms. Gilbert identified him as her assailant, police said.

N.M. man injured in 2-vehicle collision

A 37-year-old man from Albuquerque, N.M., was in fair condition yesterday after being injured Monday morning in a two-vehicle collision on Fort Meade Road, county police said.

Mike Lombardo was thrown from a 1990 Nissan Pathfinder that overturned after it was struck by a 1982 Ford Escort traveling east on Fort Meade Road at 11:46 a.m., police said. The Ford's driver, Timothy Bert Nagel, 25, of Hyattsville, had swerved to avoid a car stopped in the road, police said.

Mr. Nagel lost control of his car and it crossed the center line into the westbound lane of Fort Meade Road. His car hit the Nissan, which was driven by William James Carrano, 30, of the 7600 block of Sheridan St. in Fort Meade, police said.

Mr. Nagel was not injured. Mr. Carrano and Mr. Lombardo were taken to Prince George's Hospital Center. No condition report was available for Mr. Carrano.
