On a slow TV night, the place to be is "Melrose Place," where today's most talked-about prime-time soap makes room for one of the stars of yesterday's most talked-about prime-time soap. Tonight's the night Linda Gray, formerly of "Dallas," joins the Fox series as a preamble to a spinoff soap, "Models Inc." Live coverage of Richard Nixon's funeral is available at 7 p.m. EDT on the major networks, CNN and C-SPAN. Coverage of the funeral may pre-empt scheduled programming on some stations.

* "Behind Closed Doors With Joan Lunden" (8-9 p.m., WJZ, Channel 13) -- This special was unavailable for preview, but is scheduled to provide many "behind-the-scenes" features: on the new "Maverick" movie, Shaquille O'Neal, etc. What's behind this special, of course, is the desire to give a prime-time perk to one of the network's "Good Morning America" stars. ABC.

* "The Nanny" (8-8:30 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- After tonight, "The Nanny" will go on hiatus. CBS.

* "Beverly Hills, 90210" (8-9 p.m., WBFF, Channel 45) -- Who's going to emerge as the star of the show? That's the plot tonight as Shannen Doherty's Brenda and Jennie Garth's Kellie are among the devious competitors for the female lead in the college play. Fox.

* "Traps" (9-10 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- Guest star Terence Knox is a detective in this episode. CBS.

* "Melrose Place" (9-10 p.m., WBFF, Channel 45) -- Heather Locklear'sAmanda crosses paths with her long-absent mother, played by Linda Gray. Meanwhile, another long-absent character returns, a turn of events that ought to shake up "Melrose Place" even further. Fox.

* "Late Show With David Letterman" (11:35 p.m.-12:35 a.m., WNUV, Channel 54) -- Tonight's guests include Jerry Seinfeld.

* "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" (12:35-1:35 a.m., WMAR, Channel 2 -- Amy Irving is the guest. The musical guest is Buffalo Tom. I wonder: Did the show's bookers call and ask, "Buffalo Tom, won't you come out tonight?" NBC.

Cable

"El Mariachi" (8-9:25 p.m., Cinemax) -- This 1992 film, made on a shoestring budget so low no shoes were included, will premiere tonight on Cinemax.

* "Beirut to Bosnia" (10-11 p.m., Discovery Channel) -- First of three parts. Robert Fisk, who has been reporting from the Middle East for almost two decades, provides a look at conflicts from the Muslim point of view.
