Construction to begin on Route 3 this month

The State Highway Administration has contracted a Millersville company to widen southbound state Route 3 in Anne Arundel County starting this month.

Another southbound lane will be added, and the Reliable Contracting Co. crew will patch and resurface the road.

Single lane closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., and message signs, arrow boards and traffic cones will be set up to guide motorists.

The $700,000 project will cover about one mile from north of Johns Hopkins Road to Davidsonville Road (Route 424).

Department review to include public forum

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. is inviting the public and Police Department employees to a public information session at 7 p.m. May 23 as part of an on-site assessment of the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

The team will work to verify that the department meets the commission's standards for accreditation.

The session will be at the Western District Police Station, 8273 Telegraph Road, Odenton.

Recreation department sponsors photo contest

The Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation & Parks will sponsor its 1994 annual photography contest between May 15 and July 16.

The contest is designed to foster an appreciation for the county's specialized recreation facilities, and photographs must depict the B&A Trail Park, Quiet Waters Park, Downs Park, Arundel Swim Center, Eisenhower Golf Course, Joe Cannon Stadium, Jug Bay Wetland Sanctuary, Lake Waterford Park, Londontown Publik House and Gardens or the Andover Equestrian Center.

Prizes will be awarded for first-place winners in five categories.

Police foundation to hold golf tourney

The Anne Arundel County Police Foundation will sponsor its third annual Golf Tournament starting with lunch at 10 a.m. with a 1 p.m. shotgun start May 6 at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Golf Course, Generals Highway, Crownsville.

A 50-50 drawing, a hole-in-one contest, and prizes will be featured, as well as lunch and an Italian dinner.

The cost is $100 per person, $400 for a foursome, $450 for corporate sponsorship and tee sign, and $100 for a tee sign.

Used-book grab bags go on sale May 7

The Ann Arrundell County Historical Society Inc. and the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society are having a used-book clearance Thursdays through Saturdays to make way for new donations.

Plastic grab bags of books will be placed in front of the societies' research center in the Kuethe Library at 3 Crain Highway S.E., adjacent to the carnival grounds in Glen Burnie.

Bags are 50 cents each or three for $1. The next book sale is May 7. Information: 760-9679.

Mediation center seeks office space

The Anne Arundel Conflict Resolution Center is seeking new offices and needs a minimum of three free or low-priced office spaces.

The center, which offers mediation services to the public, needs room for two offices and access to a conference room in the greater Annapolis area.

The center can pay $5,000 a year in rent, including utilities.

Election-day staffers sought for voting places

The Anne Arundel County Board of Supervisors of Elections needs registered voters to staff polling places during the primary election Sept. 13 and the general election Nov. 8.
