West shoots for two in row in All-Star game tonight

When it comes to bragging rights for basketball in the city, the Eastside has talked the talk and backed it up.

But heading into tonight's fifth annual Rodney Beasley Memorial Senior All-Star Game, which is scheduled to tip off at 8:15 at Southwestern, it's the Westside with the momentum.

In last year's game at Walbrook, the West squad beat the East, 102-90. It was the first victory by the West in four games.

The West's hopes for a second consecutive victory will be in the hands of the guards. Haywood Eaddy, a 5-foot-8 first-team All-Metro selection from Southwestern, will be joined by Jimmy Fields of Gilman and Donta Evans of McDonogh, both second-team All-Metro selections.

Robert Smith, who helped Douglass to a surprising run to the state 3A championship game, and Eddie Scott of Northwestern, one of the area's top scorers during the past season, also will be a part of the West backcourt.

"We are very small," said Gilman coach Tim Holley, who will head the West coaches. "We have good guards, so we should be able to put some pressure on them."

The East team will not be small. Headed by 6-8 first-team All-Metro forward Rodney Elliott of Dunbar, who signed with Maryland yesterday, and Xavier signee Terrance Payne, a 6-7 center from Lake Clifton, the East will be carrying an advantage in the frontcourt.

The East backcourt will include Southern of Baltimore's Mike Wise and Damon Cason. Cason earned a third straight first-team selection on the All-Metro squad after helping the Bulldogs to a No. 2 ranking in the country and a second consecutive state 4A championship in March.

Five players from Southern, which went 23-1 and was ranked No. 1 in the area this past season, are on the East squad. Dunbar, which won the state 2A and finished No. 5 nationally, has three representatives as does St. Frances, which reached the Catholic League Tournament championship game. Southwestern and Walbrook will have three players each on the West roster.

Lake Clifton, which finished No. 5 in the area and lost only to state 4A champion Western, will have four players on the Black team for the 6:30 p.m. girls game against the Purple.

Also on the Black team will be Nyota Mitchell, a first-team All-Metro selection from Randallstown. During the past season, Mitchell led the area in scoring (29.8) in leading the Rams to the state 3A final four at UMBC. Jacqueline Wilkes of Patterson and Christina Williamson of Mercy will be on the Black team.

Angela Brice and Kenya Holman, who helped Poly to its first 20-win season and a spot in the state 3A East Region finals, will head the Purple team. Darnetta Wilkens and Kakeysha Robinson, who helped Northwestern to the state 2A East Region championship game, also will be featured.

MA Tickets for tonight's games are available for $5 at the door.
