National League -- Suspended Florida Marlins C Benito Santiago for four games and fined him an undisclosed amount for charging the mound and inciting a bench-clearing brawl in a game against the San Francisco Giants on April 17.

Boston Red Sox -- Sent P Ricky Trlicek to Double-A New Britain. Recalled P Ken Ryan from Single-A Sarasota.

Chicago White Sox -- Recalled 2B Steve Sax from Double-A Birmingham, activated him from the 15-day DL and requested waivers on him for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release.Houston Astros -- Sent 1B Roberto Petagine to Triple-A Tucson. Recalled P John Hudek from Tucson.

San Diego Padres -- Placed P Tim Worrell on the 15-day DL, retroactive to April 19. Recalled IF Luis Lopez from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Texas Rangers -- Announced IF Jon Shave cleared waivers and will be assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Purchased the contract of P Darren Hall from Triple-A Syracuse. Sent OF Brent Bowers to Double-A Knoxville.

Basketball

Houston Rockets -- Placed F Carl Herrera on the injured list. Signed C Earl Cureton for the rest of the season.

New York Knicks -- Suspended F Anthony Mason indefinitely.

Orlando Magic -- Placed F Jeff Turner on the injured list. Signed C/F Geert Hammink for the rest of the season.

Portland Trail Blazers -- Activated C Chris Dudley. Waived G Jaren Jackson.

Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference -- Announced Penn State, fTC Alvernia, Longwood and Waynesburg were voted into the conference.

East Carolina -- Named Lee Workman assistant director of athletics for ticket sales and promotions. Promoted sports information director Charles Bloom to assistant athletics director for media relations. Promoted assistant marketing director Steve Gowan to director of marketing.
