This Pisces is in the swim with many clothing styles

Who is the real Peggy Jackson-Crute? The blue-jeaned student? The leotard-wearing fitness instructor? The businesswoman in the serious suit?

All of the above and more, says Ms. Crute, 46, of Rosedale, who also happens to be a volunteer for Empty Bowls, the Maryland Food Committee benefit on Saturday.

Since recently leaving her job as public affairs director for a radio station, her wardrobe has become more casual. But she's still comfortable mixing many styles, a talent she credits to her astrological sign.

"I'm a Pisces," she says. "That's the fish. We swim upstream and down."

What's your style?

I mix things up. It depends on how I feel. Some days I like wearing suits; other days I like to be sporty with jeans, flat shoes and a leotard.

Where do you shop?

For leotards, I'll go to T. J. Maxx. I like bright colors, florals or animal prints. They have to be fun. Sometimes when I'm teaching, I get tired or hurt a little. Wearing something bright helps. Other than that, I go to consignment shops mostly. I love the prices. Years ago, you never admitted you bought clothes there. Now my friends and I spread the word about places. Right now I love Vogue Revisited in North Baltimore.

What's your best bargain?

I bought a floral chiffon cocktail dress for less than $10.

And your biggest splurge?

I've spent $25 for a beaded bag and I'll go up to $50 for a really good suit.

What would you change about your sense of style if you could?

A friend of mine is a wardrobe consultant, and she recently came over and gathered three bags of my clothes and told me to get rid of them. It hurt me at first, but I did it. She was being very ## honest with me. I never wore black, and she told me I needed to add some black clothes to my wardrobe. Now I have a few little black dresses.

What about accessories?

Hats are my thing. I have 150 -- wool, straw, caps, Stetsons. I'll even wear them to the gym.

What celebrity would you most like to take along on a shopping trip?

For professional clothes, actress Jasmine Guy. I love the suits she wears on TV. They're chic. For workout clothes, Florence Griffith-Joyner. She designs her own clothes. They're fun and definitely stand out.

What are you planning to buy this spring?

A dress for my son's wedding. That will be my most important purchase. I've even looked through bridal magazines for ideas and talked to a designer about making one. He got engaged in February. After I wiped away the tears, the first thing I thought of was: What am I going to wear?
