National League -- Suspended Cincinnati Reds OF Reggie Sanders for five games and an undisclosed amount for charging and tackling Montreal Expos P Pedro Martinez in a game Wednesday. Sanders is appealing the suspension and will be allowed to play until his appeal is heard.

Orioles -- Announced that OF Dennis Hood was released by Triple-A Rochester to make room for OF Damon Buford.

Montreal Expos -- Placed P John Wetteland on the 15-day DL. Purchased the contract of P Butch Henry from Triple-A Ottawa.

New York Yankees -- Named Keith Wiarda director of marketing and public relations.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Sent P Joel Johnston to Triple-A Buffalo. Purchased the contract of P Jeff Tabaka from Buffalo.

Texas Rangers -- Placed P Jack Armstrong on the 15-day DL with tendinitis in his right shoulder. Purchased the contract of P Rick Reed from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Basketball

Houston Rockets -- Placed F Matt Bullard on the injured list with a strained left calf.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Placed F/C Antonio Harvey on the injured list. Activated G Reggie Jordan.

Orlando Magic -- Announced that starting F Jeff Turner will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

USA Basketball -- Named Clem Haskins of Minnesota coach of the men's junior world championship qualifying team and Clint Bryant of Augusta College and Mike Montgomery of Stanford assistant coaches.

College

Michigan -- Announced that C Juwan Howard will pass up his final year of college eligibility to enter the NBA draft.

North Carolina -- Announced that basketball G Larry Davis will transfer to South Carolina at the end of the academic year.

Southern Methodist -- Named Blake Feldt offensive line coach.

Villanova -- Extended the contract of Steve Lappas, men's basketball coach, through the 1997-98 season.

Football

Atlanta Falcons -- Re-signed QB Bobby Hebert to a one-year contract.

Detroit Lions -- Released OL Bill Fralic.

Green Bay Packers -- Signed unrestricted free-agent DE Sean Jones, who had been with the Houston Oilers.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Traded CB Ben Smith to the Denver Broncos for an undisclosed 1995 draft pick. Announced the retirement of KR Vai Sikahema.

Washington Redskins -- Signed QB John Friesz to a one-year contract.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (CFL) -- Signed WR Mark Walczak.

Shreveport Pirates (CFL) -- Signed TE Eric Washington.

Toronto Argonauts (CFL) -- Signed NG Bo Davis, DT Ricky Massey and DT Leroy Thompson.

Hockey

Dallas Stars -- Signed G Emmanuel Fernandez to a three-year contract.
