Fitness center is dedicated to surgeon

April 19, 1994

Western Maryland College's new Lifetime Fitness Center, featuring such exercise options as aerobics, rowing and weightlifting, was dedicated Friday in honor of Dr. Lawrence Blumberg, a Baltimore surgeon and WMC alumnus.

The center is in the Gill Physical Education Learning Center.

Dr. Blumberg, of the Western Maryland Class of 1967 and an orthopedic surgeon in Baltimore County, was honored for his leadership efforts on behalf of the new center. Others who contributed to the center also were honored with a plaque.

Dr. Blumberg, who has been a WMC trustee since 1990, issued a challenge to fellow alumni and college friends in 1992 to improve the college's fitness facilities.

He pledged $33,000 in challenge money to the effort, which focused on raising funds for major renovations to the lower level of the college's Gill Center and for the purchase and donation of new fitness equipment.

His challenge has raised $111,000 for the project.
