Loyola women capture CAA title

The milestones keep piling up for the Loyola women's lacrosse team.

The No. 1 Greyhounds set a school record for consecutive wins yesterday, as they edged No. 6 William and Mary, 8-7, in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament championship at Curley Field.

At 15-0, Loyola broke the mark set in 1984, and their 15th also matches the school record for wins in a season.

The Greyhounds rebounded from a three-goal deficit to beat the Tribe on a goal by Gina Roberts (Severna Park) with 6:16 left, and in the final minutes, Loyola's defense held off a strong rally by the Tribe.

Greyhounds goalie Linda Ohrin (Mount Hebron) earned most valuable player honors. She made two big saves against free-position shots in the final 5:08, the only saves of the half for Ohrin, who finished with four.

Ohrin deflected the credit to her teammates. "I told the defense the [MVP] plaque would be in the locker room," she said. "I could not do my job without Kerry Carlson, Tricia Grant, Monica DiCandilo, Deirdre Cosgrove and Lynda Lohsen."

The Tribe jumped to a 3-0 lead, but defense kept the Greyhounds in the game.

Loyola outshot William and Mary 25-12, but the Greyhounds struggled to finish. They continually forced passes inside or shot directly at Tribe goalie Sarah Witkowski (12 saves).

Jeanne Harrington put Loyola on the board 13 minutes into the game. Harrington's second goal on a free-position shot late in the half and a transition goal by Michelle Meyer (Broadneck) with 28 seconds to go brought Loyola within one at the half.

The Tribe went up 7-5 midway through the second half, but the Greyhounds quickly started chipping away. After Carlson (Centennial) scored, Tara Kramer tied it on a free-position goal with 13:28 to go.

Roberts came up with the game-winner, running in from the sideline and ducking between two defenders to find the angle.
