Drama club to produce hit from Broadway

What happens when a witch, Cinderella, Jack and his cow and other fairy tale characters venture into the woods to look for something that is missing in their lives? North County High School Drama Club will offer an answer to that question this week when they perform the Stephen Sondheim Broadway hit "Into the Woods" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in the school auditorium, 10 E. First Ave. Tickets are $6 a person and are available at the door. T-shirts and refreshments will be sold at intermission. For more information, call 222-6970.

Belle Grove Elementary School news: A appreciation luncheon for volunteers and block parents is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the school. For reservations, call the school at 222-6589.

Brooklyn Park Elementary School news: Congratulations to fourth-grader Serena Woods, who was selected to exhibit her art at a permanent display at the Focus Point Center for Youths at Crownsville State Hospital.

* Burger King Night is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Burger King on Nursery Road. Proceeds will benefit the playground fund.

* The art department needs the following items: McDonald's salad containers, microwave plates, white bed sheets, old leather purses, hatch-hook yarn, rickrack and sewing trim.

North County High School news: A golf tournament is planned for Friday at Bear Creek Golf Club in Westminster. A continental breakfast is from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 8 a.m. There is a $55 entry fee, due by June 17. Professional magician Ray Gayleard Jr. of Brooklyn Park, will perform as Mr. Spooky at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Brooklyn Park library, 1 E. 11th Ave., for children ages 3 to 10. The Olde Brooklyn Park Improvement Association has canceled its meeting for this month. The next meeting is planned for May 17.

Harbor Hospital Center news: The Harbor Hikers walking program is expanding its hours at the Glen Burnie Mall. The new evening indoor walking program, "Hike at Nite," will begin at 6 p.m. April 26. The program will include free screenings and fitness instruction.

On the fourth Tuesday of each month, a hospital representative will provide blood pressure screenings and register new walkers at the mall. Information: 347-3478.

* A free educational program, "Creating Your Exercise Routine," will begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the hospital's Gruehn Building, room 404. Students will learn strengthening exercises. For more information, call 347-2563.

* The hospital will celebrate National Volunteer Week this week by honoring more than 170 local residents who have contributed more than 16,000 volunteer hours in 1993. The volunteers will receive recognition pins at a dinner.

* If you're a student and want to volunteer, the hospital is accepting applications for this summer's Junior Volunteer Program. Students must be 15 or have completed the ninth grade. The program is for high school and college students who want to learn new skills and earn community service credits.
