5 arrested on drug charges in raids

Three men and two women were arrested on drugs charges Tuesday, after police intercepted a 2-pound package of marijuana that had been shipped from Arizona. The package led police to two addresses, where the arrests were made.

Police said the marijuana was worth $9,000 on the street.

At 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, police raided a house in the 7900 block of Sutherland Court, arrested two people and recovered a small amount of marijuana. Christopher Lee Michaels, 23, was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of marijuana. Laura Lee Phelphs, 22, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

At 11 p.m. Tuesday, police raided a house in the 1700 block of Sandbar Lane, where they arrested three people and recovered 4 ounces of marijuana with a street value of $1,000.

Richard George Smith, 27, was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Richard Louis Brooks, 30, and Gina Hockenberry, 24, who police said were Mr. Smith's roommates, also were arrested. Mr. Brooks was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Ms. Hockenberry was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Police said the investigation is continuing.

Car seats stolen from auto on lot

Two car seats worth $2,500 were stolen from a car parked in the storage lot of the Wooten Motor Cars repair lot on Ritchie Highway, county police said.

The theft occurred between 8 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday, police said. The seats were stolen from a 1989 Volkswagen Jetta. Police have no suspects.
