County schools fill their kindergarten ranks through tomorrow

It may seem like the middle of spring to you, but county schools are busy preparing for summer and fall.

Countywide kindergarten registration continues through tomorrow. Parents should bring their child's birth certificate, Social Security number, proof of residency and immunization records.

Contact your local elementary school for registration hours.

Youngsters entering kindergarten and first grade are required to have four diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DPT) shots, three polio shots, two measles, one mumps, one rubella (second measles can be part of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine).

For information on free immunization clinics, call the county health department's immunization office at 222-7020.

Registration for three terms of six- and eight-week summer credit classes continues through July 11 at Anne Arundel Community College.

You can register at the Arnold campus, Arundel Center North in Glen Burnie and the Fort Meade Army Education Center. Office hours at the Arnold campus are 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday.

Registration hours change when the college shifts to a four-day summer work week on May 30. Information: 541-2241.

Parents and other community members are invited to a forum with School Superintendent Carol S. Parham at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Broadneck Senior High.

Dr. Parham, who was recently appointed to the position, will discuss her philosophy and goals and will listen to concerns. Bring you ideas and questions.

Cub Scout Pack 994, which meets at Folger McKinsey Elementary School, recently presented the pediatric patients at North Arundel Hospital with hand-crafted paper bag bunnies.

The holiday mementos came from Pack Leader Nancy Nolan and her assistant Easter Bunnies, Michael DiMaggio, Todd Dratleff, Dale Hubbard, Daniel Kaus, Patrick Nolan and Christopher Roederer.

The Anne Arundel Community Concert Association will continue its 34th annual membership campaign until Monday.

Attendance at the September through April concerts is by membership only. Already scheduled for next season are: "An Evening of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin," with Tony Sandler and the Greg Thiesen Ensemble; pianist Irina Chukovsky; Cantible, a male quartet from Europe; baritone Stephen Kechulius and pianist Carol Jansen Kechulius; and the Peabody Ragtime Ensemble.

This month, the Severn River Lions Club adds a delicious item to its monthly citrus sale -- Vidalia onions.

The onions, plus Valencia oranges and pink grapefruit, shipped overnight from Florida, may be ordered until 5 p.m. Saturday. The fruit can be picked up in the Severna Park High School north parking lot between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. April 23; the onions on May 7.

The Anne Arundel County Fair will have its third annual Spring Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 23 and 24, rain or shine.

The fair features entertainment, horse shows (Western on Saturday, English on Sunday), pony rides, face painting, a flower mart, food and more than 100 artisans displaying their works.

* At the fairgrounds on April 23, there will be antique and garden tractor pulls. The antique tractors get under way at noon; the garden tractors at 5 p.m. The rain date is April 24 at 11 a.m.

The Severna Park Jaycees is having a planning meeting at 7 p.m. April 27 at the Severna Park branch library to organize a Junior Olympics scheduled this August.
