Lilyan Lorenz, who was noted for her quick wit and was regarded as a "surrogate parent" for students during 40 years as a secretary at St. Paul's School, died Sunday of cancer at her Homeland residence. She was 76.

John Ordeman, retired headmaster of the school, said, "She had a wicked wit. When someone came in one day complaining that a bird had messed on their new car, she said, 'For some people, the birds sing.' That's the way she looked at things."

Thomas N. Longstreth, an English teacher and coach at the school for 32 years, described Miss Lorenz as "funny, very funny."

"She had a quick sense of humor and was quick on the uptake," he said. "She was a very capable person who did an awful lot for St. Paul's."

Penny Partlow, the school's librarian, echoed the sentiments of many at the school when she said, "Her death marks the end of an era at the school. She got to know so many students here over the years."

J. M. Dryden Hall, a Baltimore attorney and member of the school's class of 1950, said, "She was an intercessor between the boys and the headmaster, often to the boys' advantage. She would put a less offensive spin on the tale.

"She was a surrogate parent to the boys and was dearly loved by them and their parents," he said.

Miss Lorenz was born and reared in East Baltimore and was a 1938 graduate of the old Eastern High School on North Avenue.

After working in secretarial positions at the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, she began her career at St. Paul's in 1945 at its old Rogers Avenue campus. The school moved to its present location in Brooklandville in 1952.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the Animal Rescue League and the Wildlife Foundation.

Graveside services were set for 11 a.m. today at the Reisterstown United Methodist Church Cemetery, 245 Main St., Reisterstown.

She is survived by several close friends.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lilyan Lorenz Memorial Fund, St. Paul's School, 11152 Falls Road, Brooklandville 21093.
