Three people were killed and another was critically injured when their cars collided on Route 140 west of Reisterstown in Baltimore County during the rainy evening rush hour yesterday.

Both cars were occupied by women traveling with their sons, county police said.

Pronounced dead at the scene were Clifford Thomas Anderson, 20, and his mother, Mari Carmen Anderson, 43, both of the 900 block of Wampler Lane in Westminster. Mr. Anderson was driving the car, a Geo Storm, police said.

Ellen Mary Nason, 51, of the 300 block of Holly Hill Road in Reisterstown, who was driving a Buick, was also pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Her son, Timothy Nason, 15, was in critical condition last night at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Sgt. Paul Franzoni, of the Baltimore County Western Traffic unit, said the Geo Storm was headed north on Route 140 at Nob Hill Park Drive during a heavy rainfall about 5:25 p.m. It apparently went out of control on the wet five-lane highway, slid sideways across the center line and was struck by the southbound Buick, Sergeant Franzoni said.

The Buick struck the right side of the Geo with such force that the passenger seat was pushed into the driver's side, police said.

The Buick's engine was pushed back toward the passenger compartment, and the side and rear windows shattered, police said.

Investigating officers said Timothy Nason would have been flown to the trauma center, but the weather was too bad for the state police helicopter to fly. He was taken instead by a Baltimore County medic unit.

A Baltimore County police team was at the site, about a quarter-mile north of Interstate 795, taking measurements and photographs to reconstruct the crash scene and to try to determine the speed of both vehicles at the time of the crash.

Northbound traffic was rerouted from I-795 to Hanover Pike to Route 91 and back to Route 140 for drivers heading to Westminster and west. Southbound traffic was directed onto Gores Mill Road to Nicodemus Road.
