Troopers seize $32,000, car during traffic stop

Troopers from the John F. Kennedy barracks on Interstate 95 seized more than $32,000 and a 1990 Ford Thunderbird after stopping a speeding car headed north between Route 543 and Stepney Road on March 30.

The driver, 27, from Washington, D.C., gave his consent for troopers to search the vehicle for drugs and weapons.

During the search, troopers discovered that when the electric seat switches were activated, two secret compartments in side panels behind the rear seat opened. In the compartments, troopers said they found $32,410 and two boxes of fabric softener.

The driver, who said he knew nothing about the money, was issued a speeding ticket, a police spokesman said.

Fabric softener is sometimes used by drug runners to disguise the smell of narcotics from dogs trained to sniff out illegal drugs, the spokesman said.
