Arts Council awards prizes to performers

Fifty-seven Maryland artists will receive 1994 Individual Artist awards totaling $191,000, according to the Maryland State Arts Council.

Awards ranged from $1,000 to $6,000 in the categories of Broadway/musical theater, classical music, ethnic music, jazz, solo dance performance, solo theater performance and tradition-based music.

Out-of-state juries representing each of the disciplines reviewed total of 256 applications. Awards were based strictly upon artistic merit.

A list of recipients, by discipline, follows:

Broadway/musical theater: Stephen P. Cramer, Howard County, $6,000; Michael P. May, Charles County, $3,000; Carol C. Nethen, Anne Arundel County, $1,000; Christopher W. Patton, Montgomery County, $1,000.

Classical music: Ronald L. McFarlane, Baltimore County, $6,000; Timothy J. Schwarz, Baltimore City, $6,000; Susan Boykin, Montgomery County, $3,000; Suzanne J. Morin-Orban, Prince George's County, $3,000; Agi Rado, Baltimore City, $3,000.

Ethnic music: Munir N. Beken, Baltimore County, $6,000; Usha Char, Montgomery County, $6,000; Pearl H. Pan, Baltimore County, $6,000; Nghia D. Nguyen, Prince George's County, $3,000.

Jazz: Glenn L. Cashman, Baltimore County, $6,000; Ronald J. Elliston, Montgomery County, $6,000; Drew D. Gress, Baltimore County, $6,000; Stephanie A. * Auditions for plays chosen for the 1994 Baltimore Playwrights Festival are scheduled at 2 p.m. today at Catonsville Skills Center, 106 Bloomsbury Ave.; 7:30 p.m. today at Spotlighters Theatre, 817 St. Paul's St.; 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Fells Point Corner Theatre, 251 S. Ann St., and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Vagabonds Theatre, 806 S. Broadway. Actors should prepare a two-minute monologue. Callbacks are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fells Point Corner Theatre.
