Towson third seed in regional

April 09, 1994

Towson State is seeded third in the NCAA Southeast Regional gymnastics meet tonight at West Virginia University.

The Tigers, ranked 15th in the nation, will compete against defending national champion and top-seeded Georgia, No. 2 Florida, Kentucky (No. 4), North Carolina (No. 5), West Virginia (No. 6) and George Washington (No. 7).

The regional champion will advance to the national championships at the University of Utah in two weeks. Seven at-large teams will also make the nationals. Towson State qualified for the nationals in 1990.

"Going into regionals as the 15th-ranked team in the nation gives us a chance," said coach Dick Filbert. "If we have a good meet, we could do it."

The Tigers (18-2) are led by five gymnasts who earned All-ECAC honors last week: Karen Sturek and Wendy Chalmers, both juniors, finished fourth and sixth in the all-around; Carrie Leger, a sophomore, was seventh in the all-around; Joy Rudy, a junior, was second on bars; and sophomore Pam Johnson was fifth on bars.
