Singers vie today in Holiday contest

In the name of "Lady Day," 14 amateur singers from Baltimore city and county are competing today in the fourth annual Billie Holiday Vocal Competition.

Semifinal song presentations begin at noon in the Graham Auditorium of the Walters Art Gallery, 600 N. Charles St., and admission is free.

The final round of competition for five singers is at 2:45 p.m., with the awards ceremony at about 4 p.m.

Each singer has 10 minutes to perform one song recorded by Holiday and another of the contestant's choosing. Each finalist will sing an additional song.

Judges include local vocalist Karen Goldberg, Lerry Jeter, owner of Dimensions in Music record store, and Bob Matthews, jazz columnist for the Baltimore Afro-American.

The winner earns a $1,500 cash award and a featured performing opportunity at Artscape '94 (July 15-17); second place brings $1,000 and third $500. The 1994 contestants: Cynthia Audrey, Julie Bauer, Faye Brown, Beanie Chambers, Sabrina Doughty, Joanne M. Douglas, Denise Hall, Sandra Lynne Jenkins, Stephanie Jordan, Doreen Newman, June Page, Robin Rouse, Daisy Sherrod and Denise Weems.
