Kiwanis' charity golf tournament to usher in season

Fore! Start the season with the 14th annual Kiwanis Foundation of Crofton Charity Golf Tournament at Crofton Country Club on May 16.

The shotgun start will be at 1 p.m. Prizes will include a new Neon automobile from Tate-Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth of Annapolis.

Crofton Country Club pros Mark Spolarich and Bill Sporreat will lead a pretournament clinic at 10 a.m. A buffet dinner and awards program will follow the tournament.

Entries are required by May 9 to qualify for early registration prizes. Registration and sponsor forms are available from Kiwanis golf chairman Bob Garland, P.O. Box 3101, Crofton 21114, or call him at 721-1249. Registration forms also are available at the Crofton Country Club Pro Shop.


Paul Stillwell, who edited "The Golden Thirteen: Recollection of the First Black Naval Officers" and the soon-to-be published "Assault on Normandy," will discuss his books at the Crofton Library at 7 p.m. April 19.

"The Golden Thirteen" is based on the personal recollections of the Navy's first black officers. His latest book consists of first-person accounts of those who participated in the D-Day landings. Mr. Stillwell is director of the U.S. Naval Institute's history division.

The Crofton Athletic Council (CAC) is looking for volunteers to fill three vacancies on the board of directors and another community-spirited individual to serve as registrar.

Elections will be at 8 p.m. May 11 at Crofton Town Hall. Those interested in running must announce their candidacy in writing by Sunday to the CAC Nominating Committee, P.O. Box 3402, Crofton 21114.

* The council also is looking for the Cardinal of the Year, an award given to a CAC coach, board member or volunteer. The nomination must be accompanied by a brief explanation of why the nominee is deserving.

Send nominations to the CAC, P.O. Box 3402, Crofton 21114, Attention: Cardinal of the Year nomination. Nominations must be received by May 1. The winner will be announced at the general membership meeting May 11.


The Arundel Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will hold a yard and craft fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 at the Arundel Volunteer Fire Department on Route 424. The table rental fee is $10. Refreshments and a bake sale table also will be available.

The Bowie-Crofton Multiple Sclerosis Support Group will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Adult Day Care Center of Bowie, 3112 Belair Drive. Meetings are open to the public.
