Kline homers to pace Mercy to title

First baseman Meg Kline doubled and homered in both games to lead Mercy to two wins in the Old-Timers Fastpitch Softball Tournament at Patterson yesterday.

Mercy (2-2) beat John Carroll, 12-7, in the championship game. Earlier, the Sharpshooters edged Southern-B, 9-8.

Kline had a combined seven RBI for the tournament.

John Carroll had beaten Patterson, 15-8, in the opening round. Southern (3-1) defeated Patterson (2-2), 15-5, in the consolation game.

Baseball

* Broadneck 2, Old Mill 1: The No. 20 Bruins (3-0) upset No. 2 Old Mill (1-1) in yesterday's final after edging 4-1 Loyola, 4-3, in the first game in extra innings to win its own 10th annual Holiday Baseball Tournament for only the second time.

Junior Dan Gerbasi knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in both games.

A pitcher's duel between Broadneck's junior Dan Gerbasi and Old Mill's Jeff Haynie resulted in seven scoreless innings.

Boys lacrosse

* Greenwich 7, MSJ 5: Brook Streit scored three goals as visiting Greenwich (Conn.) paced host Mount St. Joseph (3-1). Greenwich (4-2) maintained the lead throughout the game beginning with a 1-0 first-quarter advantage. Midfielder Jason Newman led the Gaels with two.

* Loyola 13, Severna Park 6: Junior midfielders Scott Diggs, Tim Hahn and Brian Zeller each scored two goals as Loyola (4-0) paced Severna Park in the championship game of the C.M. Wright Tournament.

Junior midfielder Scott Diggs made a hat trick to lead host Loyola (4-0) past visiting Springfield (Pa.), 9-4, in the opening round of the tour

nament. Junior midfielder Tim Hahn added two goals to Loyola's cause. Loyola built a 3-0 first-quarter lead en route to a 4-2 halftime advantange.

Girls lacrosse

* Arundel 11, Dulaney 10: Senior Katie Hamburger scored a game-high five goals as Arundel (2-0) topped No. 15 Dulaney in the Arundel Tournament championship game. Senior Barb Muller added four goals for Arundel.
