3 teens held in cab driver's shooting

April 01, 1994

Annapolis police arrested three teen-agers Wednesday and charged them as adults with attempted murder in the shooting of a city cab driver.

Toreceo Java Wells, 15, of the first block of Bens Drive; James Edward Smith, 17, of the first block of Bens Drive; and Shawn Anthony Pollard, 15, of the first block of Victory Parkway also have been charged with assault with intent to commit robbery and using a handgun in the commission of a felony. They are being held without bond in the county jail.

Stewart Owens Cole, the Colonial Cab Co. driver, told police he picked up three youths near Bay Ridge Gardens apartments Tuesday night and drove them to Annapolis Roads Apartments. The youths then changed their minds and asked to be taken away from the complex.

The driver told police that as he started to pull away, one of the youths announced a holdup. Mr. Cole said he thought they were joking and cursed them. It was then that one of the youths shot him in the back of the head.

Police said several people called yesterday and provided information on the suspects. A search of the Wells home turned up a handgun, police said. Mr. Cole, 44, of 1600 block of Dorsey Road, Hanover, remains in critical but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
