Good Friday, Easter services for families

Area churches will be conducting Good Friday and Easter services this weekend, and invite you and your family to join the celebration.


The Pasadena Ministerium will conduct its ecumenical Good Friday service at Community United Methodist Church, 8680 Fort Smallwood Road, from noon to 3 p.m.

Clergy scheduled to speak include: Rev. Charles Harvey, Community United Methodist; Rev. Brian Rafferty, Our Lady of the Chesapeake; Rev. John Douglas, Emmanuel Lutheran; Rev. Frederick Ramsay, St. Andrew's Episcopal; Rev. Glen Morris, Chesapeake Christian Center; Rev. Boyd Frank, Lake Shore Baptist; Rev. Barbara Bunker-Vercelli, Faith United Methodist; and Rev. Penell Jester (retired).

Visitors are invited to stay for a part or all of the three-hour service.


Downs Park Bayside Amphitheater will be the site of the annual inter-denominational Easter sunrise service sponsored by the Pasadena Ministerium.

The park will open at 5:30 a.m. Sunday with the worship service, conducted by Rev. Charles Harvey, to begin at 6:15 a.m.

Worshipers should dress warmly and bring a lawn chair.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 8615 Fort Smallwood Road, will conduct Good Friday service of the cross at 7:30 p.m.

The Holy Saturday vigil will be co-celebrated with the congregation of St. Andrew's Episcopal at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at St. Andrew's, 7859 Tick Neck Road.

Easter services will be at 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday.


Galilee Lutheran Church, 4652 Mountain Road, will conduct an Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m. Sunday.

Traditional Easter Sunday worship with communion will be at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.


Jenkins Memorial Church, 133 Riviera Drive, will present the film, "Scars That Heal," at 7:30 tonight.

Sunday's services will begin with a sunrise service at 6 a.m., to be followed by breakfast.

The Sunday school will presents its Easter program at 9:30 a.m., with morning worship at 11 a.m.


The choir at Lake Shore Baptist Church, 4613 Mountain Road, will present the Easter cantata "Let All Heaven Rejoice," by David Clydesdale, at 7:30 tonight and tomorrow night.

The performances, directed by Linda Kay Funk, will feature special effects and stage techniques.

Sunday services include a 6:30 a.m. sunrise service; traditional Easter services follow at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.


Magothy-Chelsea Community Lutheran Church, Third and Beach streets in Chelsea Beach, will conduct a sunrise communion service at 6:30 a.m. Sunday with breakfast to follow.

Children attending Sunday school at 9:15 a.m. will be treated to an Easter egg hunt and refreshments.

Traditional Easter communion service will begin at 10:30 a.m.


Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, 4760 Mountain Road, will conduct its Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m.

Three services are scheduled on Sunday morning. The 6:30 a.m. sunrise service, conducted by the youth of the church, will take ++ place at the Heptinstalls home, 5130 Mountain Road.

Traditional Easter services will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday.


Our Lady of the Chesapeake, 8325 Ventnor Road, will conduct Good Friday liturgy, Veneration of the Cross and communion at 3 and 7:30 p.m.

The Easter Vigil will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Masses on Easter will be at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.


Pasadena United Methodist Church, 61 Ritchie Highway, will participate in the ecumenical Good Friday service at Our Shepard Lutheran Church on Benfield Boulevard, from noon to 3 Easter Sunday services will begin at 6 a.m. with a sunrise service to be followed by breakfast at 7 a.m.

Festival Easter service will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday.


St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 7859 Tick Neck Road, will conduct Good Friday liturgy service at 7 p.m.

The church will host Easter Vigil with baptism at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Sunday communion services are at 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.


St. Jane Frances de Chantal, 8499 Virginia Ave., will celebrate the Lord's passion at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. today.

Holy Saturday services will begin with morning prayer at 9 a.m. The traditional blessing of food is scheduled at 9:45 a.m. Easter vigil service will begin at 8 p.m.

Masses on Easter Sunday are: 7:30 a.m.; children's masses at 9:30 a.m. in both the upper and lower churches; 11 a.m., upper and lower churches; and 12:30 p.m.


Delicious homemade desserts and goodies will be on sale starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the bake sale sponsored by the Aide Society of Jenkins Memorial Church. The bake sale will be set up in front of the Jamesway store in Lake Shore Plaza.

Homemade cheesecakes, hot milk and pound cakes, cookies, cupcakes and brownies will be available.


The Chesterfield Homeowner's Association will have its annual children's Easter Egg Hunt at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Crystal Palace Pool area.

Rain date is April 9.
