State, IRS offer tax aid

April 01, 1994|By From Staff Reports

With the filing deadline two weeks away, state and federal income tax officials announced plans yesterday to work as a team in offering help on returns for befuddled taxpayers.

For the next two weeks, free one-stop assistance on federal and state forms will be available in Baltimore from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday on the first floor of the Fallon Federal Building at 31 Hopkins Plaza and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lobby of the State Office Building at 301 W. Preston St.

The sites will be open until 7 p.m. on April 15, and Internal Revenue Service and state representatives will be helping procrastinators until the midnight deadline that night in the main post office on East Fayette Street.

Taxpayers also may obtain help by telephone, from the IRS for federal returns at 1-800-829-1040; and from the state at 225-1995 in the Baltimore area, or 1-800-MD-TAXES from elsewhere in Maryland.

All state income tax offices, which are listed in the state tax booklet, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, with walk-in and telephone service.

In addition to their regular hours, both the federal and state income tax agencies announced they would be providing telephone assistance from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday of the next two weeks.

The state will offer telephone and walk-in services at its offices from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 9.
