Senators approve plan to raise sheriff's pay

March 31, 1994

Anne Arundel County's Senate delegation voted 4-1 yesterday to support a raise for the county sheriff, but not nearly what he was asking for.

The proposal, already approved by the county House delegation, would increase the sheriff's $42,000 annual salary by 6 percent in the next fiscal year and by 3 percent in the three subsequent years.

After four years, the sheriff would be making $48,700 a year. That is considerably less than the $65,000 requested by Sheriff Robert G. Pepersack Sr.

He proposed setting the sheriff's salary at 73 percent of the state's attorney's pay, which is $89,000 a year.

Sen. Gerald W. Winegrad, an Annapolis Democrat, was the only senator voting against the proposal.
