Baysox take hit on early-season games

BOWIE -- The Bowie Baysox have been greeted warmly by Prince George's County ticket buyers, but their unfinished stadium will cost them some early-season admissions.

Sales are approaching 215,000 tickets, a club official said, which is almost as high as the Baysox reached all of last season at Memorial Stadium. But season-ticket holders will be reimbursed for games that have been shifted out of Prince George's County Stadium because of weather-related construction delays.

The park is not scheduled to open until May 20 at the earliest.

"We're pro-rating the ticket costs up until the time we play here," general manager Keith Lupton said yesterday. "It's the only fair thing to do."

As a result, season-ticket holders who want to attend games scheduled for Frederick's Grove Stadium, Judy Johnson Field in Wilmington, Del., or the University of Maryland's Shipley Field will have to purchase new tickets if they want reserved seats.

General-admission tickets will be honored at those sites and can be upgraded for $2. If fans want reserved seats at Frederick or Wilmington, they will have to buy them at the Baysox or Frederick Keys ticket offices.

Seating at Shipley Field will be first-come, first-served, said Lupton, who added that members of the Baysox' Founders Club (original season-ticket buyers) will received 25 general admission tickets in the mail for use at the new sites.

The Baysox have sold 1,400 full season-ticket plans, 900 partial plans and 7,000 12-ticket books.

"We're trying to make the best of a bad situation," Lupton said in regard to the scheduling.

tTC "Our goal for being here is still May 20, but if the rain prolongs it could be a little later. We're still planning to play two-thirds of our games at Prince George's Stadium."

NOTES: All 142 regular-season games will be broadcast on WNAV (1430 AM) with team public relations director Dave Collins doing play-by-play. Forty games will be aired live with the others carried on a delayed basis after Orioles games. . . . Bowie and Frederick will play an exhibition at Grove Stadium April 6, at 7:05 p.m. There will be no charge for admission, but donations will be accepted to benefit the Frederick Evening Kiwanis Children's Fund. . . . Lupton said a Single-A team could be located in Salisbury by Maryland Baseball Limited Partnership, Inc. (which owns the Baysox and Keys) as early as 1995. . . . The Baysox have opened a store selling team merchandise and souvenirs in Bowie Plaza (Route 197).
