50-meter pool highlights UMBC expansion plans

March 29, 1994|By Doug Brown

UMBC will build a 50-meter pool for year-round use as part of an expansion and renovation project that will also include artificial turf and a running track at UMBC Stadium, a 10-court tennis complex and a new gym next to the current one.

Construction of the pool, 50 meters by 25 yards, will start in late summer and be completed in about two months. Located behind the 25-yard indoor pool adjoining the field house, the new one will be an outdoor facility in the warm months and be covered by a bubble in the winter.

UMBC athletic director Charlie Brown declined to disclose the cost of the pool, saying funds have been allocated but that bids haven't been solicited.

"This will enhance campus life in general and our already-outstanding varsity swimming program in particular," Brown said. "We hope to attract junior and senior national championship meets. When it's used as an outdoor pool, there will be seating for 1,000."
