International Automobile Federation (FIA) -- Suspended Formula One driver Eddie Irvine of Northern Ireland for one race and fined him $10,000 for dangerous driving during the Grand Prix of Brazil.

Baseball

Orioles -- Purchased the contract of OF Lonnie Smith from Triple-A Rochester and assigned him to the 40-man roster. Optioned P Mike Cook to Rochester.

Boston Red Sox -- Signed former Orioles P Todd Frohwirth to a minor-league contract. Sent C John Flaherty to their minor-league camp for reassignment.

California Angels -- Sent P Russ Springer to their minor-league camp for reassignment. Signed IF Rex Hudler to a one-year contract.

Cleveland Indians -- Placed P Jerry Dipoto on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 25. Optioned 1B Herbert Perry, P Julian Tavarez and OF Omar Ramirez to Triple-A Charlotte. Reassigned C Joel Skinner and P Chad Ogea to their minor-league camp for reassignment.

Chicago Cubs -- Placed P Frank Castillo on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 20, and P Jessie Hollins on the 15-day disabled list. Optioned P Turk Wendell and C Darron Cox to Triple-A Iowa. Sent P Mike Anderson and P Chuck Crim to their minor-league camp for reassignment.

Chicago White Sox -- Traded SS Esteban Beltre to the Texas Rangers for P Scott Eyre; assigned Eyre to their minor-league camp for reassignment.

San Francisco Giants -- Announced that Peter A. Magowan, managing general partner and president, has acquired the remaining interest in the team held by Walter H. Shorenstein. Placed P Bud Black on the 15-day disabled list, effective April 3. Sent 1B J. R. Phillips and P Tony Menendez to Triple-A Phoenix. Seattle Mariners -- Purchased the contract of P Bobby Thigpen from Triple-A Calgary.

NBA -- Suspended Houston Rockets C Hakeem Olajuwon for one game and fined him $2,500 for making intentional physical contact with referee Bill Spooner during Sunday night's game. Named Atlanta Hawks F Kevin Willis Player of the Week.

Arkansas State -- Named Tom Jordan tight ends coach and assistant recruiting coordinator.

Baylor -- Fired Pam Bowers, women's basketball coach.

George Washington -- Announced that C Yinka Dare would forego his final two years of eligibility and enter this year's NBA draft.

Florida State -- Suspended F Derrik Carroll indefinitely for failing to follow prescribed academic guidelines.
