Lucky van lightning hits twice

March 29, 1994|By Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Some people are born lucky. Others seem to get their luck off a used car lot.

When Betty and Johnny Taylor of Port Orange went car shopping 13 months ago, they were told about a brown 1991 GMC van that had been owned by a Florida Lotto winner.

That didn't sway the Taylors, who say they aren't superstitious. They liked the van and needed one for Johnny's trucking company, so they bought it.

A week ago, the Taylors won $7.94 million in Lotto.

"I think it was incidental," said Betty Taylor, 52. "We always knew we were going to win it."

The van has had two owners. Both became millionaires after buying it.

"If I was them, I'd gold-plate it," said Duane Wakefield, sales manager of the dealership that sold the van to the Taylors. Neither he nor the Taylors remember the name of the previous owner,

Since the word of the lucky van got out, about a dozen strangers have called the Taylors asking to buy it. But it's not for sale, Betty Taylor said.
