STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

March 28, 1994

Student: Katie O'Brien, 17, of Severna Park

Accomplishments/Interests: Katie is a senior at Archbishop Spalding High School.

She has been a member of the National Honor Society since her sophomore year, is the senior council representative in Key Club, a semifinalist for the Maryland Distinguished Scholar program and a Varsity member of the girls lacrosse and field hockey teams.

As a member of the Key Club, she helped wrap gifts for more than 100 needy children at a Christmas party in December at the school.

Through her father, a counselor at North Arundel Hospital, she learned of the PAINTERS program there (Patient Advocates in the Emergency Room).

The program has volunteers act, "as sort of a buffer" according to Katie, between patients, medical staff and family members in the emergency room.

For about 12 hours a month, Katie helps explain emergency room procedures to patients and family members, assists patients with registration, and comforts them while they wait to see a physician.

Katie is the youngest volunteer in the PAINTERS program and says that it is helping her become acquainted with the workings of a hospital. Because she plans to become a pre-med student, she values the experience.

Recently she was tutored sixth grade students at St. Ignatius Loyola Middle School in Baltimore.

Future plans: Katie hopes to begin pre-med instruction at Boston College or St. Mary's College.
