A Year Of Homicides

March 27, 1994

A map locating each of 1993's record-setting 353 homicides in Baltimore shows the Eastern Police District, which had 83, to be the city's most violent area. Hot spots within the district: areas around the recently raided Greenmount Avenue and 21st Street, the Johnston Square neighborhood, near Green Mount Cemetery, Ashland Avenue just north of Johns Hopkins Hospital, and portions of East Chase Street. The 1993 toll eclipsed a record set just one year earlier, when 335 people were slain. So far in 1994, however, city police report 53 homicides -- down from 76 at the same time a year ago.
