Cleveland Indians -- Assigned P Paul Lesch outright to Single-A Columbus.

Florida Marlins -- Optioned OF Darrell Whitmore and OF Nigel Wilson.

Montreal Expos -- Traded OF Glenn Murray to the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named.

San Diego Padres -- Relocated their Single-A Midwest League affiliate from Waterloo, Iowa, to Springfield, Ill.

Texas Rangers -- Acquired C Junior Ortiz from the Cleveland Indians for P Paul Lesch and a player to be named.

Basketball

Boston Celtics -- Released G Tony Harris.

Dallas Mavericks -- Activated C Sean Rooks from the injured list.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Fired coach Randy Pfund and assistant coach Chet Kammerer. Named Magic Johnson coach and Michael Cooper assistant coach for the remainder of the season.

New Jersey Nets -- Announced that they would sign G Dave Jamerson to a 10-day contract. Placed C Dwayne Schintzius on the disabled list

California -- G Jason Kidd announced that he will pass up his final two years of eligibility to enter the NBA draft.

Coe -- Named Brent Brase men's basketball coach.

Long Beach State -- Named Robert Maxson, who guided Nevada-Las Vegas through a decade of unprecedented growth and waged a running battle with basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, president.

Oklahoma State -- Named Tommy Kaiser tight ends and special teams coach.

Yeshiva -- Fired women's basketball coach Mike Cohen.

Football

NFL -- Announced that it had approved the change of the Phoenix Cardinals' name to Arizona Cardinals. Announced that the World League will resume play in 1995 with franchises in Barcelona, Frankfurt, London and three other cities to be named.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Re-signed unrestricted free-agent DT William Perry to a series of two one-year contracts.

Houston Oilers -- Matched the four-year, $4.1 million offer sheet that OT Kevin Donnalley signed with the Los Angeles Rams.

CFL Colts -- Signed QB Mike Pawlawski, DT Randy Hart, DT Robert Presbury, DE Ivan Caesar and WR Jimmy Guarantano. Named Bonnie Downing director of community relations.

Calgary Stampeders (CFL) -- Re-signed LB Matt Finlay.

Las Vegas Posse (CFL) -- Signed QB Lee Saltz and C Brad Leggett.

Hockey

NHL -- Suspended Ottawa Senators D Dennis Vial for one game and fined him $500 for deliberately firing a puck into the Buffalo Sabres bench at the end of Sunday night's game.

Detroit Red Wings -- Recalled RW Martin Lapointe from AHL Adirondack.

Philadelphia Flyers -- Recalled C Andre Faust from AHL Hershey.

St. Louis Blues -- Recalled F Vitali Karamnov, F Tony Hrkac and G Parris Duffus from IHL Peoria.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Recalled LW Jim Cummins and D Eric Charron from IHL Atlanta.

Toronto Maple Leafs -- Called up D Frank Bialowas from AHL St. John's.

IHL -- Announced that Larry H. Miller has sold the Salt Lake franchise to a group headed by Tom Wilson, who will move the franchise to Auburn Hills, Mich., at the conclusion of this season.

Track and field Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union -- Suspended coach C. Ramanathan after allegations that he sexually harassed female athletes.
