Terps women upset No. 1 Virginia, 5-1

COLLEGE PARK -- No. 3 Maryland used a mixture of zone and closely contested man-to-man defense to stagger top-ranked Virginia, 5-1, in a women's lacrosse game yesterday at Denton Field.

The Cavaliers (2-1), the defending national champions and winners of 11 straight, had scored 27 goals in their first two games.

Junior attackman Laura Harmon scored two goals and freshman midfielder Sarah Forbes added a goal and two assists for the Terps (2-0).

* Loyola 16, Penn 2: Betsy Given (Broadneck) and Erika Mawhorr (Severna Park) scored three goals each to lead No. 3 Loyola (4-0) past Penn (1-2) at Curley Field.

* UMBC 11, Colgate 10: Emily Petrlik (Howard) scored with less than nine minutes remaining, leading UMBC (3-0) over Colgate (1-2).

Alison Zaetz scored four goals to lead the Retrievers. Petrlik and Meghan McElwee each added two. Jill St. Clair, Chrissy Bueker, Kara Keenan and Noel Spahr each scored two goals for Colgate.
