Redskins nab Gesek from Dallas

March 16, 1994|By Vito Stellino | Vito Stellino,Sun Staff Writer

Washington Redskins coach Norv Turner managed to raid his old team, the Dallas Cowboys, for one of its offensive starters yesterday.

John Gesek, a starting guard in 1992 who lost his job last year when he sprained his foot and then became the Cowboys' starting center late in the season when Mark Stepnoski was injured, agreed to a three-year, $3.6 million deal.

Turner and general manager Charley Casserly, who were in Fresno, Calif., yesterday to watch quarterback Trent Dilfer work out, will stop in Dallas today to sign Gesek to a contract that will earn him a $900,000 signing bonus and base salaries of $800,000, $900,000 and $1 million.

Gesek, 31, said the fact that Turner was his offensive coordinator in Dallas helped persuade him to come to Washington.

"I really had a good feeling about the whole organization, but the fact I had a past with the head coach really made a difference," Gesek said.

He will become the Redskins' starting center, enabling Raleigh McKenzie to move to right guard in place of Mark Schlereth, plagued by injuries the past two years.

The Redskins will spend $8.7 million this year on Gesek, linebacker Ken Harvey and tight end Ethan Horton, although they'll count $5.1 million against the salary cap this year because their signing bonuses are pro-rated.

The Redskins are now just $900,000 under the salary cap, so they'll have to cut another player before signing another free agent.
