COACH OF THE YEAR

Lynette Shelley, Joppatowne -- She produced a dramatic turnaround in the Mariners' fortunes in just two seasons. Inheriting a program that had been hard-pressed to win a game, she improved to 9-11 last year and to 18-4 this season. After a season-opening loss -- which set the stage for a lot of coach-player conversations -- the Mariners lost two regular-season games to unbeaten Fallston, and to Easton in the state Class 1A championship game. A Harford County native, she is a graduate of Joppatowne High and the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. She was at Aberdeen High as a teacher and girls JV coach for five years before getting the job at Joppatowne. "I was able to introduce some new ideas this year, and we talked after games about situations and how each player could get better."

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Laura Thomas, Harford Christian, 6-1, Sr., C -- She was second in the county in scoring (18.2) and rebounding (13.2), led the county in field-goal percentage (52) and also averaged 4.5 blocks, 4.4 steals, and 3.0 assists. She finished a four-year career with school records for points (1,314) and rebounds (1,339), and also holds the school records for assists and blocks. Earlier this month, she was named the Most Valuable Player of the Maryland and Mid-East Region Christian Schools tournaments and the team won both titles en route to a 19-3 season. In addition, she was the state Christian schools MVP as a sophomore and the regional MVP as a junior. Among those recruiting her are several Division I universities.

FIRST TEAM

Brandi Barnes, Joppatowne, 6-1, Soph., C -- The only non-senior starter for the Class 1A state finalists, she averaged 14 points, 14.4 rebounds and five blocks a game, the latter two being

county bests. Shealso was second in the county in field-goal percentage (47). In two Class 1A state tournament games, she averaged 10.5 points, 14.0 rebounds and six blocks.

Candy Credito, Fallston, 6-0, Jr., C -- She led her team with 9.5 rebounds to go with 8.8 points and 3.7 blocks, and had 14 rebounds in the Cougars' Class 2A North Region final victory over Towson in a meeting of 20-0 teams. She was one of four junior starters. Last fall, she was an All-County selection in cross country.

Lori Heffley, Fallston, 5-3, Jr., G -- She topped the balanced scoring production for the young (no senior starters) Cougars at 10.7 per game, and also averaged four assists (third in the county) and four steals. Her 68 percent foul shooting led the county. She had 15 points in the regional win over Towson. An average of 12 players scored in every game as the Cougars outscored opponents by an average of 61-32 in a 21-1 season.

Miranda James, C. Milton Wright, 5-6, Soph., G -- The Mustangs were another well-balanced squad of mostly underclassmen, and finished 14-7. James was second on the team in scoring at 11.4 and also averaged 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals.

Krysten Porcella, John Carroll, 5-4, Sr., G -- A do-everything player, Porcella was first in the county in scoring (18.8) and second in field-goal percentage (44), assists (4.3) and steals (5.0). Between points and assists, she had a hand in 64 percent of the Patriots' points.

Erin Updegrove, C. Milton Wright, 5-9, Soph., F -- She was the team leader in scoring at 13.4 and rebounding at 8.4 as the Mustangs reached the Class 3A North Region final. She scored 22 in each of the two regional games. Going into the season, she was the only one of four returnees with any experience, having averaged six points and six rebounds as a freshman.
