Chargers beat 'Skins for DL Davis

March 14, 1994|By Vito Stellino

The Washington Redskins suffered a setback in the free-agent market yesterday when they lost Phoenix Cardinals defensive lineman Reuben Davis to the San Diego Chargers.

Davis, a six-year veteran, got a three-year, $4.5 million deal from the Chargers as the Redskins, who have salary cap problems, refused to go that high.

The Redskins, who want to sign a defensive lineman because they're planning to waive Charles Mann today and also don't plan to keep Al Noga, will now attempt to sign either Jon Hand of the Indianapolis Colts or Brent Williams of the New England Patriots.

The Redskins also are involved in intense negotiations with Dallas Cowboys center John Gesek and still hope to sign him.
