COACH OF THE YEAR Damon Matthews, Dunbar -- For the second straight year, Matthews had less wrestlers (eight) than most every other city team. But for the second straight year, his Poets (3-6 in the MSA B Conference) finished higher than any other city team in the postseason state tournaments. The Poets finished 13th in the states after being eighth last year, were tied with Mervo for the most District 9 Baltimore City champs (three), had an MSA champ and two runners-up, two reginal champs and a fourth-place finisher, and two of three state qualifiers were state runners-up. Only one other city team had three state qualifiers, and no other city team had two state place finishers. All four regional qualifiers return.
