Pittsburgh Pirates -- Sent P Jeff McCurry, P Urbano Lugo, P Daryl Irvine, C Angelo Encarnacion and IF Jose Sandoval to their minor-league camp for reassignment.

Basketball

NBA -- Turned down the Charlotte Hornets' protest of an overtime loss Feb. 20 to the Cleveland Cavaliers because a referee's mistake didn't have a clear impact on the outcome. Suspended the Minnesota Timberwolves' Stanley Jackson for last night's game and fined him $5,000 for a flagrant foul.

Chicago Bulls -- Placed G John Paxson (sore left knee) on the injured list. Signed G Jo Jo English to a 10-day contract.

Dallas Mavericks -- Signed F-C Lorenzo Williams for the remainder of the season.

Miami Heat -- Announced it will sign G Morlon Wiley to a 10-day contract to replace G Bimbo Coles, who dislocated his left index finger Monday night.

New Jersey Nets -- Placed F Chris Morris on the injured list. Activated former Washington Bullets F-C Rick Mahorn.

Philadelphia 76ers -- Released F Bill Edwards.

Portland Trail Blazers -- Fined G Clyde Drexler for skipping a practice to attend an ice show with his family.

ACC -- Named Maryland freshman C Joe Smith co-Player of the Week.

Ivy League -- Named Princeton's Sydney Johnson (Towson) Rookie of the Week.

Auburn -- Announced the resignation of AD Mike Lude.

Canisius -- Announced the resignation of women's basketball coach Denise LaRusch.

Missouri -- Named Gene McArtor associate AD.

Navy -- Named Richard Bell defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach. Transferred former inside linebackers coach Jake Gonos to defensive ends; strong safety and anchorbacks coach Ron Harris to defensive interior line; and staffer Mike Drake to the defensive secondary.

Northeast Louisiana -- Named Tucker Peavey offensive line coach.

Texas Southern -- Named Bill Thomas football coach.
