Gabriel Cronin

School: Howard High School

Hometown: Columbia

Age: 18

Gabriel loves the chance to be someone other than himself. He is a budding actor at Howard, where he has been in more than a half-dozen plays and dramas, most recently "Barefoot in the Park."

Acting is not the senior's only forte. He's a straight-A student, a Maryland Distinguished Scholar Finalist and a Hugh O'Brien Leadership Award recipient. He leads the school's madrigal group and belongs to the National Honor Society.

Throughout high school, he has been involved with student government, class government, French Club and Drama Club. He was named Outstanding Spokesman for Freedom in a 1992 Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy competition. He has been named as one of the top 40 students in the Howard County Math Team League.

He has been selected as a member of the All-Eastern Choir as well as the All-State Chorus and twice received an A- rating on the High School Piano Exam.

Plans: He wants to study engineering in college and pursue acting on the side.

His comments: "[Acting] is a chance to entertain people. It's a chance to be something different than who you usually are. It's helpful to be outgoing and to be able to stand up in front of people. But the whole point of acting is you can change who you are."
