Northeast edges Wicomico

Sophomore point guard Kristin Briggs and junior forward Marcia Gaskins each contributed 21 points as third-seeded and host Northeast edged sixth-seeded Wicomico, 70-68, in a 2A East Region first-round girls basketball game yesterday.

Jen Johansen, a junior guard, scored 10, which gives her 1,002 career points.

Neither team led by more than three points at the end of a period. The Eagles travel to second-seeded Parkside in the region semifinals tomorrow at 7 p.m.

* South River 83, Forest Park 40: Senior center Pam Patterson led all scorers with 26 as South River (11-2) defeated Forest Park in a 2A East Region first-round game.

Sophomore point guard Jessica Marion scored 21 and junior guardCassidie Dunbar added 19. South River jumped out to a 27-14 first-quarter lead to cruise past the Foresters.

The Sea Hawks travel to top-seeded Northwestern for tomorrow's regional semifinals at 7 p.m.

* Calvert 51, Chesapeake-AA 49: Sheena Harris and Sherrise Dowell led Calvert with 15 each as third-seeded and host Calvert edged six-seeded Chesapeake-AA in a Class 4A East Region first-round game.

Megan Van Wambeke led Chesapeake with 14. The Cougars came back to outscore Calvert 25-19 in the second half but fell short. The Cavaliers advanced to the regional semifinals and will play at second-seeded Severna Park tomorrow night at 7.
