A 51-year-old Eldersburg truck driver was killed instantly Friday when he was struck by a forklift at the Eastalco Aluminum Co. in Frederick County, officials said yesterday.

Investigators at the Frederick County sheriff's office said Edward D. Martin of the 5700 block of Oklahoma Road was struck and killed when he walked around the front of his tractor-trailer as the forklift operator was backing around the rig. Sheriff's investigators said the driver of the forklift, Robert Keller, 59, of Middletown was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment of shock after the accident.

Inspectors from the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health office also responded to investigate the 8:20 a.m. accident.

Mr. Martin was a driver for D. M. Bowman Inc. of Frederick, officials said. He had been driving for the company since June, according to a Bowman employee.

Mr. Martin graduated from Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical Senior High School in Baltimore.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Mount Moriah Masonic Lodge No. 116, A.F. & A.M.

He is survived by his father, Edward W. Martin; his fiancee, Christine Curtis; and a sister, Barbara Smith.

Funeral services were scheduled at 11:30 a.m. today at Loring Byers Chapel, 8728 Liberty Road, Randallstown. The Rev. Kenneth Humbert of Mount Olive United Methodist Church was to conduct the service.
