Two Laurel men charged with raping a 21-year-old female acquaintance in Ellicott City Sunday, then taking her car after she escaped, were ordered held without bond in the Howard County Detention Center yesterday after an early morning bond hearing.

The woman, a resident of Berlin, was treated and released from Howard County General in Columbia early Sunday. She told police she was driving the two men home from a party that had begun Saturday night in Baltimore County when the attack occurred.

Calvin Coolidge Shifflett III, 21, of the 200 block of 10th Street, and Daniel Lee Speirs Jr., 18, of the 8400 block of Old Columbia Road, are charged with first-degree rape and a first-degree sex offense.

Several hours before their arrest at Mr. Shifflett's home at 2 a.m. Sunday, police say the men had argued with other party-goers at a home in Oella, just across the Patapsco River from Ellicott City. They had accompanied the victim in her car to the gathering about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.

In effort to prevent a fight, the woman told the men she would drive them home to Laurel.

The victim told police that the two men began fondling her as she drove. After telling them to stop, she pulled her car over in the 4800 block of Red Hill Way and ordered them out. According to charging documents, both men sexually assaulted after she stopped the car.

The victim escaped and ran to a nearby home in the 4700 block of Salterforth Place, where she called police.

Police say the two men then drove the victim's car to Laurel and parked outside Mr. Shifflett's home.
