Andrew Zimdars

School: Wilde Lake High School

Hometown: Columbia

Age: 16

Andrew has been busy in his three years in high school -- most notably as a volunteer tutor for non-English speaking students for the Columbia-based Foreign-Born Information and Referral Network. He has been involved for nearly three years with the nonprofit organization that helps settle newly arrived families.

At school, he is a member of the Junior Class Council, as well as the "It's Academic" team, which was a finalist in the Baltimore region last year. He belongs on the Math Team and was twice named to the All-County Team.

He sings in the school's chamber choir and the barbershop quartet as well as the madrigal ensemble, which performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" before an Orioles game at Camden Yards in September.

He also works as a peer mediator, helping students settle their differences in a nonviolent way before they're referred to the principal.

Plans: He is interested in robotics and microchip design as well as urban planning and mechanical engineering.

His comments: "I try not to take myself too seriously," he said. "I try not to take experiences in life seriously. I realize some good stuff will happen and some bad stuff will happen. As long as you maintain a positive attitude about activities you're involved in and the work you're doing, you will continue to meet your goals and to succeed."

Send nominations to Student Standout, The Sun for Howard County, 5570 Sterrett Place, Suite 300, Columbia 21044. Please enclose a brief description of the student's activities and the student's phone number.
