Overall crime decreased in '93, report states

Homicide, rape, burglary and arson increased in 1993 over the previous year, but overall crime in Carroll County decreased 3.6 percent, according to the statewide Uniform Crime Report released Friday.

Four murders were reported in the county during 1993, as opposed to one murder in the preceding 12 months.

In three of the 1993 homicides, police have arrested and charged suspects. The Feb. 17 fatal shooting of William Charles Prodoehl, 34, a carpenter who lived in Westminster, remains unsolved.

Rape in the county increased by two incidents, from 33 to 35. Burglary increased by 49, from 744 to 793.

Robbery within the county dropped drastically; 39 incidents were reported in 1993, down from 61 robberies in 1992.

Larceny, motor vehicle theft and aggravated assault all decreased during 1993.

The county's law enforcement agencies reported a total of 3,420 incidents in 1993, down from 3,548 the previous year.

Arson, which is not included in the crime index totals, increased by eight, from 34 in 1992 to 42 last year, according to the report.
