February 23, 1994

Shipley's Choice Elementary School will be honored today at an awards ceremony and luncheon as one of Maryland's Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.

The Millersville school was one of eight elementaries statewide to be recognized for student performance, leadership, teaching environment, curriculum and instruction, student environment, parent and community support, and vitality.

The school, with an enrollment of about 450 students, competed against 38 other schools for the honor.

Shipley's Choice will now compete in the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, which is administered by the U.S. government.

Lawn mower stolen in Severna Park

A Montgomery Ward lawn mower worth $1,200 was stolen from a house on Balsam Drive in Severna Park sometime between 11 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Carol Jean Finlay, 59, told police that when she awoke Saturday morning, the doors to her shed were wide open. Some of the fence rails around her property had been removed to make the theft easier, Ms. Finlay told police.

The shed was not locked, police said.
