Bonaly's flip is a no-no

February 22, 1994

Officials of the International Skating Union have banned Surya Bonaly from doing a back flip in practice for the women's figure skating.

The jump is not allowed in competition, although Bonaly, the only black skater, uses it in exhibition routines and did it twice in her first practice.

Technical delegates of the ISU warned Bonaly's mother and coach, Suzanne, that the jump "intimidates and bothers" the other skaters.
