Bad track shuts down Charles Town

February 19, 1994|By From Staff Reports

CHARLES TOWN, W.VA — CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Charles Town race track canceled yesterday's scheduled 10-race card due to potentially hazardous track conditions.

According to track superintendent Charlie O'Bannon, the rapid rise in temperatures has resulted in an uneven track with portions of the track extremely sloppy while other areas continue to thaw.

"We're in the process of removing the ice and snow which has accumulated along the inside rail and that should alleviate some of our drainage problems," said O'Bannon. "That will allow us to concentrate on breaking up some of the thawing areas of the track and should enable us to resume racing [today]."

The cancellation comes on the heels of Wednesday's abbreviated program, which was halted after one race.
