Mother to serve 3-year term for child abuse

February 19, 1994|By From Staff Reports

All but three years of a 20-year prison sentence were suspended yesterday for a Baltimore woman who pleaded guilty to child abuse in the starvation death of her 2-month-old daughter.

"I think it's outrageous," prosecutor David Chiu said of the sentence for Christine Jones, 31, of the 2000 block of N. Calvert St.

He had recommended to Judge Joseph P. McCurdy Jr. in Baltimore Circuit Court that the mother of three be sentenced to 20 years with 10 years suspended.

Upon release, the woman will be on probation for five years and will be required to be placed in a group home under supervision of the Client Services Division of the public defender's office.

Mr. Chiu said the dead baby, Michelle E. Jones, weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces when born May 16, 1993, but weighed 4 pounds 9 ounces when she died July 16.
